Mevlid Kandili observances in Turkey

The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) confirmed that Mevlid Kandili, commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, would be observed on Monday, August 24, 2026, corresponding to the 12th night of the month of Rabi' al-awwal.

As the observance approached, various religious and civic figures shared reflections on its significance. Feyzi Aydın of the Prophet Lovers Foundation noted the historical transformation brought by the Prophet’s birth, while Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca emphasized embodying values such as justice, mercy, and brotherhood. Academic Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören suggested using social media to communicate these values to younger generations.

Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Memduh Büyükkılıç joined Kılca in highlighting the Prophet's legacy of mercy and justice, calling for these values to guide humanity through global conflicts, specifically mentioning Palestine and Gaza.

As the 1501st anniversary of the Prophet's birth is commemorated under the theme ‘Our Prophet and Good Morals,’ observances across the Islamic world include reading the Quran, reciting salawat, and participating in religious programs at mosques. While Diyanet clarified there is no mandatory fast specifically for Mevlid Kandili, performing voluntary (nafile) fasts and prayers is considered a meritorious act of gratitude. Many observers have also called for increased solidarity and peace in conflict-affected regions, including Gaza and Lebanon.

In the lead-up to the observance, municipal leaders from Kayseri, Karatay, Konya, and Kocaeli issued messages emphasizing the Prophet's legacy of compassion. These leaders frequently linked the religious occasion to the necessity of addressing modern humanitarian crises, particularly in Gaza and Palestine.
