Mexican electoral institutional preparations

Overview

Electoral authorities in Mexico are implementing various initiatives to facilitate civic participation. In the State of Mexico, the Electoral Institute (IEEM) is developing strategies for residents living abroad, particularly in the United States. The IEEM is offering three voting modalities: electronic voting, postal packages, or voting at consulates. Officials noted that electronic voting is a priority for approximately 80 percent of the 82,176 registered migrants, and emphasized that security measures, including cryptographic signatures and physical security features, are in place to ensure integrity.

In Mexico City, the Electoral Institute (IECM) has approved ballot models for a 2026 consultation involving children and adolescents. The ballots are tailored to three age groups: 6 to 9 years old, 10 to 13 years old, and 14 to 17 years old. Topics for the consultation include environmental care for younger children, and school coexistence, facilities, and safety for older participants.
