Overview

The Mexican government has implemented large-scale initiatives to bolster the agricultural sector and achieve food sovereignty. Initially, the federal government reported an investment of 107 billion pesos in welfare programs, benefiting 13 million producers across 2,470 municipalities. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo noted that these efforts, part of the ‘Plan México’, have led to production milestones in beans, corn, and milk.

Building on these efforts, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) launched the ‘Cosechando Soberanía’ strategy for the 2026-2027 Autumn-Winter cycle. This program focuses on reducing costs for small and medium-sized producers through consolidated direct purchases of seeds, fertilizers, and bio-inputs. The initiative provides access to credits of up to 1.3 million pesos and specifically targets white corn producers in Sinaloa and Sonora, as well as wheat producers across several northern and central states.
