Mexico diplomatic support for Palestine
Overview
Mexico has consistently reaffirmed its diplomatic support for the Palestinian people and a two-state solution through various international and domestic channels.
At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez advocated for a two-state solution, stating, ‘We believe in the legal equality of States, because sovereignty is not measured in armies or material resources.’ He emphasized that sovereignty should be based on international law and called for the protection of civilians.
This stance was further reinforced during a meeting at the Mexican Senate between Higinio Martínez Miranda, President of the Board of Directors, and Palestinian Ambassador Nadya Rasheed. Martínez Miranda emphasized that Mexico’s long-standing supportive stance toward Gaza and Palestine would continue.
Ambassador Rasheed expressed gratitude for Mexico’s defense of international law and its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). She noted that Palestinians seek dignity, protection, and the right to remain on their lands rather than exceptional rights. She also highlighted Mexico’s humanitarian contributions, specifically noting the provision of medical care to injured Palestinian children, including one child who recently received a prosthesis to regain mobility.
Additionally, Rasheed urged Mexico to review the value chains of national corporations linked to Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories. Citing the International Court of Justice’s determination that Israel’s presence in these territories is illegal, she expressed interest in working with the Senate to ensure Mexican companies do not contribute to the illegal expansion of settlements.
