Mexico environmental conservation and cultural festivities

Overview

Mexico has launched a series of environmental and scientific initiatives. The National Week for Conservation, themed ‘Nature conservation: our future’, began with central activities at the Botanical Garden of the Chapultepec Forest in Mexico City. Organized with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp), the program includes environmental education, forest and beach cleanups, and exhibitions to promote biodiversity and ecosystem respect. Following this, the Mexico City Ministry of the Environment (SEDEMA), via the Museum of Natural History and Environmental Culture (MHNCA), hosted a week of activities from October 13 to October 18. This program integrated scientific discussions and nature exploration with Day of the Dead traditions, featuring events such as lectures on paranormal activity and scientific discussions regarding vampires. To celebrate its 62nd anniversary and Day of the Dead, the MHNCA announced a subsequent week of cultural and scientific programming from October 28 to November 1, 2026. This schedule includes a ‘Museum Night’ on October 28 with telescope observations and a concert titled ‘Omniblues en concierto: Aures Cantibus’. Other planned activities include a workshop on species related to Day of the Dead traditions, a festival regarding the importance of parasites, and a trivia session titled ‘Preguntas desde el Mictlán’ on October 31. Nationwide, Day of the Dead 2026 festivities include diverse cultural activities. In Mexico City, authorities are deploying over 11,000 police officers to secure 120 cemeteries and manage an expected 1.5 million visitors. Veracruz has increased police presence in its city center to protect tourists participating in legend tours and altar displays. In Pachuca, authorities have prepared the Municipal Cemetery for 20,000 visitors using drones, canine units, and specialized cleaning services. Guerrero is also implementing a special security operation involving over 500 officers across cemeteries, markets, and highways.
