Mexico hemodialysis service crisis
Overview
Renal failure patients in Mexico, specifically in Chimalhuacán, initiated a series of protests and road blockades to demand the resumption of hemodialysis services. Demonstrators raised concerns over intermittent treatment schedules and the quality of water used for dialysis, with some alleging that unpurified water could cause infections. One patient reported the death of a 22-year-old individual during these service disruptions.
In response to the protests at several hospitals, including “Dr. Gustavo Baz Prada” and “90 Camas de Chimalhuacán”, IMSS-Bienestar implemented measures to regularize medical services. Authorities revoked a previous plan to transfer patients to Toluca, committing instead to provide care within local municipalities. To mitigate future shortages, IMSS-Bienestar has pledged to subcontract services to private clinics if supplies at their own medical units become scarce.
