In early August 2026, Mexican authorities approved a major expansion of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, extending the zone to 84 municipalities and covering nearly 23 million residents. The reform aims to improve coordinated territorial planning, water‑resource management and regional projects such as the Felipe Ángeles International Airport.

Later the same day, the federal government announced progress on two highway projects in other parts of the country. In Colima, the six‑lane Manzanillo‑Armería stretch is close to completion, while in Michoacán the Maravatío‑Zitácuo highway will become toll‑free after widening and new bypasses are added. Both initiatives are part of a broader push to enhance transport links and support economic activity across Mexico.
