Mexico surge of brutal murders

Entities: Claudia Sheinbaum · Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) · Servicio Médico Forense · Acatlipa · Morelos

Overview

The wave of graphic killings that began in early July 2026 has continued to spread across Mexico. On 25 July, gunshots were reported in Acatlipa, a town in the municipality of Temixco, Morelos. Police, municipal forces, the National Guard and the Guardía Nacional arrived at the central kiosk and found three male victims whose heads and bodies had been dismembered and placed in colored plastic bags and cardboard boxes. Forensic teams from the state Fiscalía General and the Servicio Médico Forense collected DNA evidence; no arrests have been reported.

Earlier that day, a separate discovery of a human head inside a cooler was reported in the neighboring municipality of Axochiapan, adding to the mounting shock. President Claudia Sheinbaum, touring the region for a housing‑benefit program, addressed the security challenges, while Temixco mayor Israel Piña Labra confirmed that investigations remain ongoing. The incident raised the total number of deaths in Morelos to five over two days. Authorities continue to investigate, seeking to identify the victims and determine responsibility, while the broader pattern of brutal, seemingly organized killings persists across disparate regions of the country.
