Mexico tropical wave weather impacts
Overview
In late July 2026, Tropical Wave 21 moved across southeastern Mexico, delivering heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and hail to Veracruz, Puebla, Yucatán, Quintana Roo and the Papaloapan basin. At the same time, the seasonal canícula heat wave pushed temperatures toward 45 °C for about 40 days, while offshore Hurricane Genevieve added humidity to the Yucatán Peninsula.
By early August, a new system, Tropical Wave 24, was affecting the state of Oaxaca. It raised maximum temperatures above 35 °C, with some spots reaching 40 °C, and produced isolated showers and brief thunderstorms across the Costa, Sierra Sur, Mixteca and lower Papaloapan basin. Civil‑protection authorities continued to advise residents to stay informed, follow safety recommendations and prepare for moderate south‑southwest winds and possible electrical activity.
The two reports illustrate a sequence of tropical waves that sustained extreme heat and intermittent rainfall across multiple Mexican regions during the summer of 2026.
