In early August 2026, Mexico’s Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) announced it was seeking additional land to complete the “Vivienda para el Bienestar” initiative, which still required sites for about 400,000 homes out of a six‑year target of 1.8 million. Sedatu said it had reserves for most of the program but faced high land costs in the State of Mexico, Mexico City and Jalisco, prompting it to explore using unused federal properties and partnerships with ejidatarios and communal landowners, while pledging to avoid expropriation. A local dispute in Querétario, where a court‑ordered suspension affected a project site, was noted, with municipal officials indicating the program would continue pending judicial clearance.

A few days later, the program came under scrutiny for alleged corruption and financial mismanagement. In Yucatán, the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) transferred most environmental decision‑making authority to an undersecretary who also advises a major poultry group linked to a former governor, raising conflict‑of‑interest concerns. At the federal level, Sedatu faced criticism for paying hundreds of millions of pesos on projects it later cancelled, redirecting funds from the abandoned Urban Improvement Program to settle debts, and confronting dozens of lawsuits over contract rescissions amounting to roughly 490 million pesos. These developments highlighted growing doubts about the program’s transparency and fiscal discipline.
