Mexico's Guerrero security operations

Overview

In late July 2026, Mexican federal and state authorities began a large‑scale deployment of the Guardi­a Nacional to 19 communities in Guerrero’s La Montaña Alta and Baja regions. The operation, coordinated from Chilapa, combined preventive patrols with social‑service programs such as medical care, agricultural support and youth training, and was justified by recent violent incidents, including the killing of two residents and the discovery of six dismembered bodies.

During the week of July 27–August 2, the initial deployment was followed by a broader, coordinated security campaign involving the State Public Security Secretariat, the National Defense Secretariat, the Navy, the National Guard, the Federal Police and the State Attorney General’s Office. The campaign resulted in 24 arrests, the seizure of marine turtle products, weapons and vehicles, and the execution of 110 arrest warrants. Officials highlighted a 44 % drop in homicides since 2021 and a significant increase in investigative activity, indicating that the security presence was beginning to curb crime and dismantle explosive‑making facilities in the state.
