Microsoft Windows 11 AI and interface updates
Overview
Microsoft is implementing several changes to the Windows 11 interface to integrate AI and streamline user interaction.
Initially, the company announced plans to allow users to remap the dedicated Copilot key on keyboards. This move follows user feedback regarding the replacement of the right Ctrl key with an AI-focused button, which some found “intrusive or disruptive to existing applications”. Users will be able to customize the key to restore its original function, open context menus, or launch specific applications.
Subsequently, Microsoft unveiled a broader vision to transform the Windows 11 search function into a central hub for user interaction. This updated search function is intended to act similarly to a chat interface, allowing users to execute commands and control the computer through text. Windows lead Pavan Davuluri stated that “thousands of such direct actions are being developed”. The update, which began rolling out to Windows Insider users in early October, aims to integrate with Copilot and utilizes WinUI 3 technology to improve speed and memory efficiency.
