Mid and West Wales wildfire response and resilience

Overview

Following a summer of unprecedented wildfire activity across Wales, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) has focused on both operational response and long-term climate resilience.

During the period between July 19 and September 1, Joint Fire Control teams managed a high volume of emergency calls, totaling 8,466, with a peak of 1,006 calls on August 13. This period required the mobilization of 1,232 fire appliances and specialist resources.

In response to these environmental challenges, Chief Fire Officer Craig Flannery participated in the Wales Climate Change and Resilience Summit. Flannery advocated for a ‘whole-system approach’ to building resilience, noting that climate change is actively impacting communities, the environment, and the demands placed on emergency services.
