Middle East military escalation involving Iran
Overview
The Middle East has experienced significant military escalation involving Iranian forces and its proxies. The European Union has issued condemnations regarding multiple fronts of violence.
Initially, the EU condemned a wave of Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as strikes on Saudi merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This surge in violence followed U.S. airstrikes against Iranian Revolutionary Guard facilities and subsequent Iranian missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, and Kuwait.
Following these events, the EU also condemned attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels against Saudi Arabian civilian and economic infrastructure in cities including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran. These Houthi actions, which reportedly caused 73 injuries, were described by a European Commission spokesperson as a “dangerous escalation” that violates international law.
