Middle Eastern nations as book fair guests of honor
Overview
Middle Eastern nations have been selected as guests of honor for major international book fairs. In late 2026, Saudi Arabia was named the guest of honor for the 2026 Algiers International Book Fair (SILA), scheduled for October 28 to November 7, 2026. The 29th edition of SILA is set to open to the public on October 29 at the Palais des expositions, with an official opening ceremony on October 28. The event features 1,625 exhibitors from 51 countries and is expected to offer more than 300,000 titles across 46,000 square meters. Led by its Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission, the Saudi pavilion is expected to feature seminars, poetry evenings, and displays of heritage, including handicrafts and archaeological manuscripts, to highlight cultural developments aligned with Saudi Vision 2030.
Following this, the Sharjah Book Authority was announced as the guest of honor for the 39th Bogotá International Book Fair (FILBo), taking place from April 20 to May 3, 2027. This multilateral agreement between the Colombian Book Chamber, Corferias, and the Sharjah Book Authority aims to “strengthen translation flows between Arabic and Spanish” and facilitate market access for authors from both regions.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia concluded its participation in the 2026 Baku International Book Fair in Azerbaijan in late October. The Saudi pavilion, which included entities such as the King Fahd National Library, aimed to showcase the Kingdom’s growing literary production and build professional partnerships within the publishing industry.
