Migrant smuggling and human trafficking operations

Overview

Law enforcement authorities in Turkey and Romania have conducted operations targeting migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

In Turkey, a large-scale coordinated effort across 23 provinces involving the Ministry of Interior, Gendarmerie, and Coast Guard led to the apprehension of 48 smuggling organizers. The operation utilized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for surveillance and resulted in the seizure of 83 vehicles and 18 boats. Additionally, Coast Guard teams rescued 32 irregular migrants, including 15 children, from a rubber boat in the North Aegean.

In a separate incident near the Calafat-Vidin bridge in Romania, authorities discovered 15 individuals from Iran and Iraq hidden inside a sealed freight compartment of a semi-trailer truck. The vehicle, driven by a Turkish citizen and traveling from Turkey to Austria, was found to have a modified trailer allowing access without breaking customs seals. The driver is under investigation for human trafficking.
