Overview

Militant violence has escalated in the Dera Ismail Khan region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

In late August, militants opened fire on vehicles in the Hathala area, injuring six police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and a Station House Officer. Security forces launched search operations following the attack, which occurred amid a reported increase in fatalities in the province.

On September 26, a suicide bombing at the Aman Mela police and customs checkpoint in the Darazinda area killed at least 11 to 13 people—including men, women, and a child—and injured approximately 30 to 35 others. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, which involved an explosives-laden vehicle, described by some reports as a ‘tractor-trolley’, ramming the post. The blast caused massive destruction, demolishing a large portion of the checkpoint and a nearby house. The attack targeted security personnel, customs officials, and civilians. In response to the influx of wounded victims, local hospitals declared emergencies and canceled staff leave, while security forces cordoned off the area to conduct search operations and investigations.
