Minas Gerais highway infrastructure and traffic management

Overview

In mid-August, local authorities and community leaders in Minas Gerais protested at the Legislative Assembly regarding the poor condition of several highways. Protesters highlighted issues such as deep potholes, mud, dust, and flooding on routes connecting Catas Altas to Alvinópolis, Caputira to Raul Soares, Marilac to Nacip Raydan, and Itaverava to Lamim. At that time, the State Department of Highways (DER-MG) confirmed that no service orders had been issued for those sections. By late August, maintenance efforts were reported in the Poços de Caldas region, where EPR Sul de Minas scheduled pavement recovery, updating signaling, and the installation of metal defenses on routes including BR-459, LMG-877, and MGC-146. Authorities also announced increased surveillance and traffic restrictions for the Independence Day holiday on September 7. The Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF) established specific restrictions for heavy or oversized vehicles on federal highways during several windows in early September to manage high travel volumes. As the holiday period approached on August 31, preparations intensified. In Minas Gerais, the PRF maintained specific traffic restrictions for heavy vehicles on single-lane stretches during designated windows on Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Concessionaires EPR Sul de Minas and EPR Vias do Café expanded roadwork efforts in the South of Minas region, performing pavement recovery, signaling improvements, and structural maintenance on the MG-290, BR-459, and MGC-491. These operations were expected to cause lane narrowings or ‘stop and go’ traffic. By August 31, preparations for the Independence Day holiday expanded to include broader security measures. The PRF launched ‘Operação Independência 2026’ to target speeding, drunk driving, and improper seatbelt use. In Minas Gerais, the PRF and Military Highway Police implemented traffic restrictions for heavy vehicles on both federal and state roads during the long weekend.
