Minimal Company Minimal Phone 2 launch
Overview
The Minimal Company, a California-based startup, has introduced the Minimal Phone 2 (MP2), a second-generation Android smartphone designed to combat smartphone addiction through hardware-driven friction. Moving away from the E Ink technology used in the first generation, the new model features a 3.92-inch or 4-inch OLED/AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1080 x 1240 pixels.
The device retains a physical, backlit QWERTY keyboard intended to make mindless scrolling less appealing while increasing text-based efficiency. To further promote digital minimalism, the MP2 includes a programmable physical switch that can disable radio antennas, GPS, or notifications, alongside a color-coded LED for alerts. Despite its focus on distraction reduction, the phone runs a full version of Android, allowing access to essential apps like Google Maps, Signal, and NFC payments.
Hardware specifications include a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and storage capacities of 256GB or 512GB. The device is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery supporting wired and wireless charging, 5G connectivity, a 50MP rear camera, a 20MP front camera, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The product is being launched via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which has surpassed its initial $100,000 goal by more than eightfold. During the pre-sale, the 8GB RAM/256GB storage model is priced at $599, with a 512GB version available for $675. The final retail price is estimated at $699.
