Mining accidents and legal fallout in Zonguldak
Overview
A series of industrial accidents occurred in the Zonguldak province of Türkiye involving coal mining operations.
In late September, a 27-year-old miner was seriously injured at the Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (TTK) Kozlu facility after falling into a coal silo approximately 400 meters underground. Although he was successfully resuscitated after his heart stopped, he remained in intensive care on life support.
On October 23, 2026, a firedamp (methane gas) explosion occurred at a private coal mine in the Gelik district operated by Demir Madencilik A.Ş. The blast resulted in the deaths of three miners, identified as Cengizhan Bükrübaş, Murat Kaya, and Recep Çolakoğlu. Of the eight workers present in the tunnel, five survived, including two who required intubation and transfer to Ankara for treatment of severe burns.
The Zonguldak Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched a judicial investigation into potential negligence regarding gas measurements and safety protocols. Following the incident, authorities arrested the mine's business owner (M.S.D.), an occupational health and safety specialist (E.Y.), and a mine engineer (Y.Ç.) on charges of negligent homicide and injury. The fugitive mine manager, Mustafa K. (M.K.), was subsequently apprehended in Ankara and detained via video link. The suspects face charges of “conscious negligence resulting in death and injury.”
In response to the tragedy, labor representatives criticized the incident, noting that Türkiye leads Europe in fatal occupational accidents, and called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and increased public oversight.
