Minnesota Zoo Canada lynx program

Overview

In late July, the Minnesota Zoo announced the birth of three Canada lynx kittens in May and a North American porcupette in July. The mother lynx, Torvi, developed a rare medical condition after giving birth and was euthanized.

A week later, the zoo highlighted the kittens' progress after their mother's death. Staff provided round‑the‑clock care as the 10‑week‑old cubs began exploring, eating independently, and building trust with caretakers. One kitten was transferred to another AZA‑accredited zoo to serve as an education ambassador, while the remaining two—Freya and Ingrid—are slated for public introduction later in the summer.

Both snapshots illustrate the zoo’s ongoing conservation and education efforts surrounding the rare Canada lynx, from the initial birth and maternal loss to the continued care and future public display of the surviving cubs.
