Missing fishing boat incident in Averøy, Norway

Overview

A large-scale search operation was launched off the coast of Averøy, Norway, after a fishing boat carrying four foreign tourists failed to return as planned on a Friday morning.

The initial search involved rescue helicopters, vessels, and local fire departments using thermal equipment. Efforts were temporarily suspended due to poor weather and darkness. Averøy Mayor Ingrid Ovidie Rangønes activated psychosocial crisis teams to support the local community during the incident.

By Saturday, rescuers discovered the empty vessel, which was found to be significantly damaged. One Czech citizen was confirmed dead, and while search efforts continued, local police and the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated they “do not expect the three remaining missing persons to have survived the incident.”

Search operations have since expanded to include the use of drones, with efforts concentrated along the western coast of Smøla island, approximately 30 kilometers from the initial discovery site. Search group leader Andreas Moseng Jakobsen described the area as “extremely difficult” for operations. It remains unclear if the tourists were wearing life jackets, as they were reportedly using their own equipment rather than the rental gear. In response to the accident, local authorities are considering stricter regulations for recreational boat rentals, such as mandatory tracking devices.
