Missing persons investigations in Latin America
Overview
Authorities in Mexico, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Chile continue to manage various cases involving missing persons.
In Mexico, investigations remain active regarding a 65-year-old man found dead in a stream following a severe storm. In Mazatlán, one year has passed since 21-year-old Carlos Emilio Galván Valenzuela disappeared in October 2025. In Baja California, authorities are searching for three people missing following storm Rachel, including a man and a minor in San Felipe and a woman in Ensenada. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda noted that while homes in San Quintín and Ensenada sustained damage, a formal state of emergency is not currently necessary.
In Ecuador, remains believed to be those of 26-year-old Joselyn Oña, missing since May, were discovered in the Chiche River near Quito.
In Costa Rica, search operations are underway for 25-year-old Carlos Valverde Chaverri, who has been missing since early October 2026. He was last seen near the Ukoko bar in Guachipelín.
In Chile, approximately 50 personnel from the Investigations Police, Navy, Civil Defense, and fire departments are searching a one-kilometer radius near Santa María beach in Santo Domingo to locate 60-year-old María Soledad Baasch, who has been missing since October 8. Authorities have located her vehicle near the Santa María del Mar condominium and found personal belongings in the search area.
