MMRDA construction safety incidents and penalties

Overview

A series of construction accidents involving infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has led to significant penalties from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

In September, a fatality occurred in Vikhroli, Mumbai, when a heavy iron barricade from a Metro 4 construction site fell onto a motorcyclist. Following the incident, the MMRDA imposed an INR 2 crore penalty on the contractor, Godrej & Boyce, and ordered an inquiry. Police registered a First Information Report against the contracting company and its management for negligence.

In October, a separate incident took place in Thane at the Anand Nagar-Saket Elevated Road project, where a 12-tonne steel reinforcement cage fell onto a moving vehicle. While no injuries were reported, the MMRDA again imposed a Rs 2 crore penalty on the responsible contractor and ordered an investigation into safety protocol lapses.
