Mobility initiatives in southern France

In the Hérault region of France, new initiatives were launched to promote sustainable and social mobility. These efforts included the association Passerelles Synergies joining the ‘donnezvotrevoiture.org’ network to facilitate vehicle donations for local solidarity garages, and the implementation of the ‘Rézo Pouce’ system to promote carpooling and organized hitchhiking in rural areas.

Following these developments, the broader Occitanie region introduced further mobility assistance measures to address rising fuel prices. Regional president Carole Delga announced initiatives such as a “1 € train” weekend in October, a doubling of carpooling subsidies to 4 € per passenger for trips up to 50 km, and the provision of 5,000 € eco-mobility vouchers for the purchase of used electric vehicles.

Recent updates confirm the implementation of these regional measures, including a second weekend of “€1 regional train tickets” scheduled for October 10 and 11. On a national level, the French government has authorized increased freedom of movement for fuel tanker trucks until October 12 to mitigate potential supply shortages. Furthermore, a national aid program has been established for low-income commuters driving significant distances for work. This program offers up to €7,600 for the purchase of new electric vehicles manufactured in Europe, specifically targeting individuals in the 6th to 8th income deciles who travel at least 12,000 kilometers annually.
