Mohammed Kudus injury recovery and Ghana squad impact

Overview

Ghanaian attacker Mohammed Kudus has begun his return to action for Tottenham Hotspur following a long-term quadriceps injury sustained in January. After undergoing surgery that prevented his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kudus progressed through individual training in August.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi initially noted that Kudus was “almost ready” but emphasized a cautious reintegration process. This transition culminated in Kudus making his first start for the club since his injury during a 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, where he played 75 minutes. Despite his return to club football, Kudus has withdrawn from the Ghana national team squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches to focus on his physical recovery.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz is facing significant squad disruptions as Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Thomas Partey remain unavailable for upcoming fixtures against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, as well as an October friendly against Morocco. To address these absences, Queiroz has called up nine additional players, including Rockson Yeboah, Jonas Adjetey, Alidu Seidu, Ebenezer Annan, Rahim Ibrahim, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Mohammed Fuseini, Benjamin Tetteh, and Felix Afena-Gyan.

Further complicating preparations, defender Nathaniel Adjei has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury, and Prince Adu Kwabena is expected to miss fixtures due to a head injury. Queiroz has emphasized that his selection criteria prioritize players who are in competitive action and physically prepared as the team begins its qualifying campaign in Bouaké before returning to Accra. He noted that the current cycle is a step toward building a squad capable of competing in the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
