Mohan Bhagwat statements on Hindu identity

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has made several public statements regarding Hindu identity and its relationship with religious diversity.

In late August, speaking in the Greater Toronto Area, Bhagwat stated that Hindu identity is not defined by specific languages, lifestyles, or methods of worship. He argued that the core principle of this identity is the “respect for diversity” and the recognition of a “unity of existence,” suggesting that external differences do not divide humanity’s essential spirit.

By early September, Bhagwat expanded on these views during a speech in New York, asserting that “a Hindu who believes Muslims have no place in India ceases to be a Hindu.” He maintained that Hindutva must accommodate India’s religious diversity.

These remarks have been contrasted by observers with reported religious tensions in India, including the alleged removal of Muslim voters from electoral rolls in Jharkhand and the destruction of a mosque in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, analysts have noted a lack of religious minority representation within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
