Overview

Following Metropolitan Petru’s retirement, Bishop Antonie of Bălţi was elected Archbishop of Chișinău, Metropolitan of Basarabia and Exarch of the Plains on 2 July 2026 and enthroned on 12 July. In his inaugural address he appealed for peace, tolerance, brotherly love and cooperation with other confessions and state authorities, reaffirming the Romanian Orthodox Church’s canonical jurisdiction over the Metropolia of Bessarabia.

Antonie led the feast of Saint Serghie of Radoneï in Vărvăreuca on 18 July, urging families to view sainthood as a vocation. The next day he celebrated his first Divine Liturgy after enthronement at the Metropolitan Paraclis “St. John the Theologian”, praying for Church unity, regional peace and spiritual renewal.

On 23 July he visited the Protopopiatul Criuleni and Dubăsari, celebrated a Divine Liturgy, blessed a new mortuary chapel in Cimișeni and addressed clergy and officials, emphasizing patience, divine guidance and inner peace. That same day Academician Ioan‑Aurel Pop, President of the Romanian Academy, delivered a conference at Moldovița Monastery on medieval religious communication, underscoring the historical role of sermons and church texts in shaping Romanian cultural language.

In a 26 July interview with Telejurnal, Antonie reflected on his shift from medicine to theology, his participation in legal battles that secured the Metropolia’s recognition, and outlined his vision: restoring the historic injustice of the Metropolia’s suppression, strengthening the Orthodox presence in Moldovan society, and clarifying relations with the Metropolia of Moldova. He described his enthronement as an “emotional moment” and warned that the next phase will demand great responsibility.
