Moluccan heritage commemorations in the Netherlands

Overview

In August 2026, several cultural events were held in the Netherlands to commemorate 75 years of the Moluccan community in the country.

In The Hague, Mayor Jan van Zanen inaugurated a pop-up museum titled ‘75 years of Moluccans in the Netherlands’ at the Lange Voorhout. Housed in six shipping containers, the exhibition features historical contexts and personal family stories tracing the community’s presence in the city, including the arrival of former KNIL soldiers. The opening ceremony included traditional Moluccan dance, tifa music, and a poem by Edward Tuheteru, chairman of the Stichting Maluku Den Haag. The exhibition ran until August 23 and coincided with the Jalan Jalandat Indische festival.

Additionally, the Pasar Leiden festival took place at the Wereldmuseum in Leiden on August 29–30. The festival featured over 80 stalls offering Indonesian, Moluccan, and Papuan food, crafts, books, and musical performances, alongside various cultural workshops.
