Monte Pergola tunnel reopening in Italy

Overview

In mid‑July, Italian authorities announced that the Monte Pergola tunnel in Solofra would reopen to all traffic on 1 August, ending a five‑year summer restriction that limited the passage to heavy‑goods vehicles during morning hours. Mayor Nicola Moretti highlighted that the change would ease congestion and improve flow for residents and businesses along the Avellino‑Salerno corridor.

A week later, the road agency Anas confirmed the reopening, adding that the south tube of the tunnel had undergone a €42 million refurbishment, including new concrete lining, widened lanes, safety barriers and upgraded lighting. The tunnel would again accommodate heavy‑vehicle traffic in both directions after a brief overnight closure for final safety checks. At the same time, Anas extended a one‑way traffic order on State Road 113 (SS113) until 7 August to mitigate impacts from nearby works, allowing minibuses under six tonnes to use the route and easing local transport between Gioiosa Marea, Brolo and Patti.
