Montenegrin parliamentary leadership tensions

Overview

Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandić has faced multiple opposition initiatives aimed at removing him from office. During a visit to Austria, Mandić denied the existence of a parliamentary majority capable of replacing him, describing the campaign against him as a “cruel and deeply untruthful” effort. He maintained that political stability is necessary for Montenegro’s goal of joining the European Union.

Following these political tensions, a diplomatic dispute arose involving the German Bundestag. Allegations surfaced suggesting that a meeting for Anton Hofreiter, Chairman of the Bundestag Committee for European Union Affairs, was being conditioned upon a prior meeting with Mandić.

Boban Stanišić, Secretary General of the Parliament, denied these claims, attributing the situation to a “communication misunderstanding” between the Parliament General Secretariat and the German Embassy. Stanišić clarified that the matter was technical in nature and that Mandić was not involved in the communication error. The issue was reportedly resolved through direct communication with German representatives.
