Monterey County infant death and fugitive search

Overview

Authorities in Monterey County, California, are searching for 38-year-old Sergio Galvez-Perez and a 14-year-old girl following the discovery of a deceased newborn on August 1 near Moss Landing. Investigators believe the teenager gave birth to the infant, referred to as ‘Baby Angelita’, on the side of Struve Road before leaving the scene. A post-mortem examination indicated the infant suffered traumatic injuries.

Galvez-Perez faces multiple felony counts, including incest, child endangerment, child concealment, and various sexual offenses. Investigators allege he impregnated the girl when she was 13 and is currently hiding her from law enforcement. The teenager is also wanted on suspicion of murder.

Subsequent reports identified Galvez-Perez as an undocumented immigrant who had been deported from the U.S. in 2008. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had issued a detainer for him on July 11, 2023, following a previous arrest, but the detainer was not honored by local authorities.
