Montevideo port operations and infrastructure development
Overview
The Port of Montevideo is facing both operational challenges and significant infrastructure development plans. Initially, maritime law expert Alejandro Sciarra highlighted the need for operational guarantees to resolve conflicts between Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) and the port workers' union. Sciarra noted that maintaining stability is a matter of national interest to ensure the port remains competitive for regional maritime services.
Following these concerns regarding operational continuity, Neltume Ports announced plans to invest approximately US$ 900 million in the Montevideo Container Terminal (MCT). This project aims to expand the port’s capacity to 1.4 million TEUs annually by 2035, targeting increased cargo volumes from Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. The investment follows a ruling by the Tribunal de lo Contencioso Administrativo (TCA) that annulled a previous decree clause deemed to create a de facto monopoly, thereby allowing for more specialized container terminals.
