Moroccan tourism and regional development initiatives
Overview
Morocco is implementing various strategic initiatives to expand its tourism sector and promote regional development. Initially, Tourism Minister Fatima Zahra Ammor announced a 188 million dirham program to develop 16 tourist villages, such as Tafoogalt, to extend tourism into rural and mountainous areas. This plan aims to create approximately 8,000 jobs and increase bed capacity through 50 new licensed projects.
Following this, the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council approved several localized development and tourism agreements. These include a 7 million dirham partnership to attract international investment through events like ‘Africa Business Days’ and the development of a new five-star luxury hotel in El Arguoub, expected to open in 2027. The region has seen a 73% increase in accommodation capacity between 2019 and 2024. Additional regional investments were also directed toward infrastructure, such as a provincial council annex, and educational support programs.
