Morocco agriculture development

Overview

In late July 2026 the Agricultural Development Agency (ADA) and the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) presented 2025 results and the first‑half‑2026 budget, linking the work to the “Green Generation 2020‑2030” strategy. They reported 125 initiatives covering roughly 5,900 ha, new desalinated‑water farms in Dakhla, €100 million African Development Bank financing, youth‑entrepreneurship programmes and research on seed improvement, water efficiency and digital tools.

Board meetings on 21 July confirmed detailed figures: 125 projects now cover 5,877 ha, including 45 projects on 1,094 ha in the Dakhla zone; 106 aggregation projects and 38,600 ha of solidarity agriculture raise the cultivated area to 108,700 ha. The agency added 13 valuation units, 37 new water points and 29 new projects (203 total since the strategy began). Youth activities comprised 1,492 events reaching 43,144 young people. INRA highlighted 15 research programmes, a 92 % budget commitment and a 66 % performance rate, focusing on seed production, cactus rehabilitation, palm propagation and direct sowing.

Export data released in early August showed agro‑food exports hit a record 86.2 billion dirhams in 2025 (a 38 % rise since 2020) and 4.7 million tonnes, representing about 18 % of Morocco’s total exports and the kingdom’s third‑largest foreign‑exchange source. The trade deficit widened to 198.38 billion dirhams in the first half of 2026 as imports rose 15.3 % to 458.77 billion dirhams, while overall exports grew 9.7 % driven by automotive and aerospace sectors; agriculture and agri‑food grew 5.7 %, though citrus shipments fell because of extreme weather.
