Morocco food security and economic challenges

Overview

Morocco is experiencing significant challenges regarding food security, rising living costs, and climate adaptation funding. According to the 2026 Global Hunger Index, approximately 2.3 million people in the country suffer from malnutrition, with 13.7% of children under five experiencing stunting. These issues are compounded by water scarcity and a reliance on importing staples. Economic data indicates that nearly all families reported an increase in food prices, with a majority stating their standard of living has deteriorated.

In response to these pressures and seven consecutive years of drought, Minister of Economy and Finance Fouzi Lekjaa has proposed new regulations for food exports to protect the domestic market and stabilize prices. Proposed reforms include modernizing twelve wholesale markets and improving logistics between production and consumption zones to ensure essential goods remain available at reasonable prices.

Amidst these domestic challenges, Morocco reported a 58.4% increase in net foreign direct investment flows for the first nine months of 2026.
