Morocco maritime infrastructure development
Overview
Morocco is executing a long-term structural transformation of its maritime sector through the National Port Strategy for 2030 and the National Strategy for Developing Logistical Competitiveness. These initiatives aim to modernize commercial, fishing, and tourism ports while enhancing ship maintenance and manufacturing capabilities.
Key developments include the Tanger Med port, which ranked fifth globally in the 2024 Container Port Performance Index. The country also topped the 2025 African Manufacturing Index. To support these goals, Morocco intends to increase its maritime processing capacity from approximately 263 million tons in 2025 to over 300 million tons by 2030, utilizing hubs such as Casablanca and Agadir.
In a specific expansion of this infrastructure, CMA Terminals has finalized the acquisition of a 49 per cent stake in the Nador Container Terminal at the Nador West Med port. Partnering with Marsa Maroc, which retains a 51 per cent stake, the joint venture will manage a facility designed with a 900-metre quay and a long-term capacity of 1.8 million TEU per year. Operations at this Mediterranean transshipment hub are expected to begin progressively starting in 2027.
