Morocco-Taiwan visa reciprocity dispute

Overview

A diplomatic standoff regarding consular services between Morocco and Taiwan began in late July 2026, after Morocco suspended the issuance of Visa Confirmation Letters (VCL) for Taiwanese travelers without an official explanation. In response, Taiwan suspended visa applications for Moroccan citizens on July 30, citing the principle of reciprocity.

The situation began to ease around September 21, 2026, when Morocco reportedly resumed processing VCL applications for Taiwanese citizens traveling for tourism. While the Moroccan government did not issue a formal public announcement, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs received verbal confirmation from the Moroccan Embassy in Japan.

Following Morocco’s resumption of services, Taiwan announced the immediate resumption of visa applications for Moroccan nationals on October 12, 2026. Although services have returned, both parties noted that standard regulations still apply and processing does not guarantee approval.
