Morocco transport infrastructure and aviation growth
Overview
Morocco has initiated a major investment program to modernize its railway infrastructure, allocating 134 billion dirhams toward development through 2030. The plan includes extending high-speed train lines from Kenitra to Marrakech, establishing a rail link to the Nador West Med port, and acquiring 168 new trains to support economic hubs and preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Complementing these infrastructure developments, the aviation sector has shown significant growth. During the first nine months of 2026, the National Airports Office (ONDA) reported that Moroccan airports handled over 29.3 million passengers, an 8.74% increase from the previous year. International traffic rose by 8.73% to 26.15 million passengers, driven largely by the European market, which accounted for 21.66 million travelers. Air cargo also experienced sustained growth, rising 14.29% to approximately 83,744 tons during this period. Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca remains the busiest hub with 9.35 million passengers, followed by Marrakech-Menara with 8.11 million.
Regarding the national carrier, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has set ambitious targets for the end of 2026, aiming for 9.3 million passengers and annual revenues exceeding 25 billion dirhams. While the company reported a 17% increase in revenue between January and April 2026, reaching 11 billion dirhams, it also recorded a net loss of 71 million dirhams for that period, which was attributed in part to geopolitical tensions.
