Motor Oil reinstatement in MSCI Greece Index
Overview
Motor Oil is set to rejoin the MSCI Greece Standard Index as its tenth constituent, effective September 1, following the August 31 rebalancing. This return follows its removal in August 2024. The company’s market capitalization has grown toward 6 billion euros, with a free float estimated at approximately 3.53 billion euros, meeting the requirements for the Standard Index.
This rebalancing is expected to trigger significant capital inflows. Market estimates suggest inflows of approximately €200-250 million, while Goldman Sachs projects net passive inflows of approximately $187 million. As a result of this shift, Motor Oil will exit the MSCI Greece Small Cap Index, making room for Kri Kri.
The stock has experienced a major resurgence, recently reaching historical highs near €62. This follows a period of strong financial performance, with the group reporting significant revenues and net profits in the first half of the year.
Concurrently, Motor Oil and HELLENiQ ENERGY are facing political pressure regarding refinery profits. Six EU nations—Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Austria—have requested discussions on a mechanism to tax windfall profits from oil companies. Motor Oil leadership has opposed potential emergency taxation. Deputy CEO Petros Tzannetakis has argued that such measures would penalize an export-oriented business model that ensures fuel security for Southern Europe.
