Motorcycle fatalities in Minnesota

Overview

Minnesota has experienced a series of fatal motorcycle accidents involving various riders across different counties. In late July, four motorcyclists died in separate incidents: one collision with farm equipment in Benton County, a single-vehicle crash in Scott County involving possible impairment, and two separate collisions with SUVs in Rochester and Hastings.

By mid-August, additional fatalities were reported. An 81-year-old woman from Tennessee died following a two-motorcycle collision on Highway 60 near Mankato; authorities stated alcohol was not a factor. In Stearns County, a 52-year-old woman from Avon was found dead in a ditch near Munson Township after leaving a group ride to travel alone. Officials noted alcohol was not believed to have played a role in that incident.

On August 20, a third motorcycle fatality occurred near Leech Lake on Highway 371. Roy John Berger, 30, was killed when a semi-truck made a sudden maneuver toward the right shoulder, causing the motorcycle to strike a cable median barrier before being run over by the truck. The semi driver was uninjured, and alcohol was not involved.

These incidents occur amid reports of rising motorcycle deaths in the state, despite a new lane-filtering law implemented the previous summer.
