Mountain rescue operations in Spain

Emergency services in Spain have reported a series of mountain-related incidents involving hikers, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts in the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa regions.

In mid-September, Civil Guard rescue groups, including GREIM and aerial units, conducted 24 operations in the Pyrenees over a single week. These interventions addressed accidents involving hiking, climbing, paragliding, and mountain biking, including evacuations for falls, fractures, exhaustion, and lost individuals.

By late September, reports indicated continued rescue activity and fatalities. In the Picos de Europa, a mountaineer died following a fall at Pico Torrecerredo, following the recent death of a Norwegian hiker in the same area. In the Aragonese Pyrenees, rescue teams managed several interventions, including hikers stuck on cliffs, medical emergencies such as a cardiac event, and individuals unable to proceed after overestimating their physical capabilities.

On September 24, a 28-year-old British mountaineer died after falling approximately 60 meters while descending from the summit of Torrecerredo in the Picos de Europa. The accident occurred on a Thursday afternoon when the climber fell into a vertical gully on the mountain’s eastern face. The Civil Guard’s GREIM unit used winches to retrieve the victim, and the UK Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with local authorities. This incident follows the recent death of a Norwegian hiker in the same region.

During the same afternoon, emergency services responded to a separate incident in the Jou Sin Tierre area, where a 54-year-old French woman was evacuated to the Hospital del Oriente in Arriondas due to a suspected tibia and fibula fracture.
