Movimento 5 Stelle environmental policy advocacy

The Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) has focused its political efforts on environmental and nature restoration policies at both national and local levels in Italy.

Nationally, the M5S criticized a proposal by the National Association of Italian Municipalities (Anci) and the National Association of Construction Companies regarding the EU Nature Restoration Plan. M5S leaders, including Silvia Alberici, described the opposition to the plan as a “short-sighted vision” and argued that nature restoration should drive innovation and protect biodiversity through urban greenery and soil protection rather than opposing economic development.

At the local level in Saronno, the M5S has called for stricter compliance with national laws concerning urban greenery. Following an announcement of a 140,000 euro allocation for tree restoration, the group has requested transparency regarding the implementation of Law no. 113 of 1992, which requires planting a tree for every newborn or adopted minor. They have asked for specific data on the quantity, species, and locations of trees planted over the last five years.
