Mozambique-Botswana bilateral cooperation

Mozambique and Botswana have initiated a series of diplomatic and economic agreements to strengthen bilateral ties. Following a state visit by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to Botswana, the two nations agreed to elevate their joint commission to a binational commission led by their respective heads of state.

Initial agreements focused on broad strategic sectors including health, culture, science and technology, justice, and defense, with a specific emphasis on transport and logistics. Key infrastructure discussions involve the Limpopo Development Corridor and the Ponta Techobanine project, as Botswana seeks expanded access to the Indian Ocean through Mozambican ports such as Maputo and Nacala.

Subsequent developments have seen the signing of specific Memoranda of Understanding to boost private sector cooperation and tourism. Business organizations from both nations have established a framework for market information sharing and joint investment. Additionally, tourism agencies have partnered to promote regional travel by combining Botswana’s wildlife attractions with Mozambique’s marine tourism through improved air connectivity and multi-destination packages.
