Mozambique infrastructure and transport development
Overview
Mozambique is undertaking various infrastructure and regulatory developments to improve national connectivity and mobility. The government has reclassified 12 airports into four distinct categories—international, regional, international entry points, and domestic—to comply with the International Civil Aviation Convention. In Maputo, a $250 million Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has begun, with the goal of transporting 40 million passengers annually by 2028.
Efforts to modernize transport have expanded to the rail sector. The state-owned operator Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) is seeking to promote railway modernization and sustainable transport solutions through participation in InnoTrans 2026. This initiative is supported by the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative, which aims to provide the country with access to new technologies and expertise to improve logistics supply chains and economic development.
