Municipal honors for community contributors

In late July 2026, city councils in Argentina highlighted local achievements. Neuquén’s council recognized archaeologist Claudia Eugenia Della Negra for three decades of work protecting the province’s archaeological and paleontological heritage, including the discovery of the first documented woman in the region and contributions to heritage legislation. In the same period, Mar del Plata’s council awarded the GAMA – Centro de la Memoria – and its founder María Cristina Álvarez for 35 years of service to people with Alzheimer’s disease and related cognitive disorders.

A few days later, in early August, Salta’s city council presented a commemorative plaque to Professor Antonio Figueroa for his long‑standing promotion of adaptive sports for people with disabilities, acknowledging both his coaching of blind football teams and the athletes he has mentored. Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, the mayor of San Francisco de Macorís allocated land to bronze‑medalist Jonathan Martínez so he could build a house for his mother, underscoring municipal support for athletes.

These events illustrate a regional pattern of municipal bodies publicly honoring individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to cultural heritage, health care, and inclusive sports.
