Municipal waste management initiatives in Latin America

Overview

Municipalities in Paraguay and Puerto Rico have introduced various waste management and sanitation programs. In Asunción, the government activated over 50 ecopoints for separating plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass, with plans to reach 100 sites to support the circular economy. Concurrently, San Pedro launched a battery collection campaign in partnership with local associations to prevent hazardous waste from entering common trash streams.

In Cidra, the ‘Actívate Cidra’ initiative focused on cleaning and maintenance operations, including the removal of debris from several highways. In Panama City, the Sanitation Authority implemented a new collection model in multiple districts using over 80 pieces of equipment. This new system includes the use of QR codes on vehicles to allow citizens to report missed collections or request debris removal through a digital portal.
