Murder charge in Parika child killing

Overview

A 76-year-old Chinese national, Quan Sheng Li, has been charged with the murder of six-year-old Zi Feng Cao in Parika, East Bank Essequibo. The incident reportedly occurred at the victim’s family restaurant following a financial dispute involving approximately US$3 million.

Investigators state that Li had invested money into the family business and went to the restaurant to demand repayment. During an argument with the child’s parents, Li allegedly retrieved a weapon and attacked the boy, who had just returned from school.

Following his arrest, Li reportedly confessed to the killing and led police to the location where he had disposed of the weapon. Li appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded to prison. The case is adjourned until early November to allow for the completion of witness statements and a post-mortem report.
