Murder of Elyne de Assis Nogueira in Brasiléia
Overview
On November 2, 2026, 39-year-old physician Elyne de Assis Nogueira was shot and killed while at a bar in Brasiléia, Acre. Security footage captured a man in a helmet and red cap firing multiple shots at the victim. Although the victim had active protective measures against her suspected assailant, including a panic button, witnesses reported that no security arrived when the button was activated.
Francisco Valadares Neto, a 55-year-old municipal prosecutor and former city councilman, is being investigated as the alleged mastermind behind the killing. Reports indicate that Nogueira and Valadares had a non-continuous relationship, and it is alleged that Valadares began a pattern of harassment and threats after Nogueira rejected a sexual proposal. Following the murder, the judiciary ordered his preventive arrest. By November 4, Valadares Neto was found unconscious at his residence and hospitalized in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the Rio Branco Emergency Room. He remains intubated following what is described as exogenous intoxication from medication ingestion. His health status has delayed the execution of his arrest warrant.
On November 6, Civil Police arrested 39-year-old Lucival Lopes de Souza, known as “Pitaca”, in the rural area of Epitaciolândia. Souza is a suspect in the shooting of the doctor and reportedly confessed to the killing, stating the crime was contracted for a total of R$ 40,000, with R$ 10,000 intended for the shooter.
In response to the case, Naluh Gouveia, a counselor for the Acre State Court of Accounts, criticized state institutions for failing to provide adequate protection to the victim and called for an urgent revision of protocols regarding violence against women. Family members have organized protests to demand justice and have expressed concern regarding the potential medical transfer of Valadares to São Paulo, fearing it could impede the investigation.
