Myanmar national immigration enforcement in Malaysia
Overview
Malaysian authorities have conducted several operations targeting Myanmar nationals for immigration and regulatory violations.
In late September, a 20-year-old Myanmar national was detained in Kota Bharu after failing to provide valid identification. The individual claimed to have entered Malaysia via a sea route from Meiktila, Myanmar, to Johor in 2024 after paying an agent approximately RM15,000. The suspect had been working as a vehicle painter in Johor prior to his detention under the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
In mid-October, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency intercepted a fiber boat near Pulau Pasir Hitam, Perak. Three Myanmar nationals were detained for suspected immigration violations and the use of unauthorized fishing equipment, specifically ‘bubu naga’. The incident is being investigated under both the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
